FOOD

Matcha Mylkbar

Bettina Banks

I just had the best Monday.

Laptop out, doing emails, sipping on a Beetroot latte AND a matcha latte.

Followed by matcha pancakes with dark chocolate sauce, macadamia, strawberry baobab coconut icecream.

Fxcking word.

I smashed this beauty of a plate in less than 5 mins. Haha! Definitely need to come back here and eat the whole menu!

Hope everyone is having a beauty of a Hustle Day.

Ho Jiak

Seeing a lot about this restaurant online and apparently being known for their Malaysian hawker style food, I just had to pull my girlfriend along with me to Strathfield, fight over parking and dive in.

I payed a visit during lunch on a Tuesday and these guys are just swamped with people on their lunch break.

As soon as you walk into the centre, you're flooded with the smell of deep fried roti, spicy curry and laksa! The shop is a lot smaller than I pictured with only a few tables and chairs aligned on one side of the store. Bar seats are also placed over looking into the open kitchen, and the large public plaza dining area just out front of the store defiantly helps spread the Ho Jiak love!

There are so many dishes to choose from, so good luck with the menu guys. We obviously just wanted to eat everything and like always, we over ordered and ate until our hearts were content!

What we ended up ordering:

Roti Canai with Curry Beef - The roti dipped in curry and the softened down beef hit the spot!

Chee Cheong Fun - Fish balls and steamed rice rolls drizzled in gooey shrimp paste and hoisin sauce.

Penang Fried Koay Teow - An awesome balance of flavour; sweet and not too salty!

Nasi Lemak - So simple! But so flavoursome. I really enjoyed the sweet chill paste! A little tip eating this dish: Don't eat this dish separate, strip the chicken off the bones mix it well!

Grandfather’s Congee - I love a good congee and Ho Jiak's congee is made just right! Not too dry or too watery. Loved the smell fried garlic and shallots.

I love that Ho Jiak's dishes are kept very simple by making sure that their recipes are authentic and exactly what you'd find in the streets of Penang. SCORE! Their store decor is a little bit cute too! Unique and rustic comparing to all the other stores around - defiantly a stand out.

If anyone is headed out to Strathfield for a feed, check these guys out. They're located in the Strathfield Plaza next to Oliver Brown, you won't miss it. Or visit their website and drool over their menu first at www.hojiak.com.au.

They're also currently running a promotion with any meal purchased and by hitting like on their Facebook page + checking in, you'll receive a FREE drink!

Teh Tarik's for us - YUMMMMM!

Lotus

I'm such a big foodie - I'm not a food blogger but I do love taking photos of my food, snapping my whole experience at the dining table and overly sharing my images on IG and FB! ;)

So to kick start my love for yum-ness under the BANKSLIFE-STYLE food tab, we have my visit to Lotus Restaurant not too long ago.

Opened in The Galeries of Sydney CBD early this year, (Yes they have a sister venue in Walsh Bay as well!) this beautifully raw textured but elegant chinese eatery is created by Chef Chris Yan. Who has had his hands covered with experience starting at Bill's in Surry Hills, Billy Kwong and China Doll.

I absolutely love the feel of this restaurant as soon as you walk in. It's got this minimal, industrial chic-ness feel to it, and floor to ceiling windows who can get anyone fangirling. By day you can imagine a warm sunlit lunch and by night, well nothing is as sexy as the city view of neon lights.

Can you ask for anymore?

Overall, I'm a dumpling lover! So where there are dumplings, I'm there! I'm also so impressed that the dishes weren't oily like your traditional Chinese restaurant dishes, but then again, Lotus is not your traditional Chinese restaurant!

100 points to Chef Chris Yan!

Thanks for having me Lotus, cannot wait to take my girls there again, TONIGHT!

Three Williams Cafe

Every time I sit at a cafe I get into a zone like state where I'm almost meditating.

Everything just becomes simpler. My senses are enlightened by the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the buzz from people talking and waiters rushing about captures my attention.

Does anyone else get into that state, or is it just me? What do you do that zones out your brain from the everyday craziness of the world? Mine, funny enough, is washing the dishes and sitting at Three Williams Cafe.

So on Tuesday, I find myself sipping coffee with some great people, chatting away and sampling nearly their whole menu! It’s seriously worth trying if you haven’t been before. If brunch is your thing, you’ll love it even more. The team are so tentative and Glen the manager speaks of Three Williams with such great passion which I love seeing in people - it really inspires me.

Plate on the left we have their "Narnie" - Coconut & lime marinated chicken, carrot and daikon salad, nam jim dressing. Plate on the right is their "Bull Horn" - Poached eggs, marinated bull horn peppers, serrano ham, feta, jalapeno salsa on toast. (This one's my favourite for breaky! YUMMO!) Cup in the back is their seasonal house made soda, consists of passionfruit and mint! So refreshing!
