RESTAURANTS

Ho Jiak

Seeing a lot about this restaurant online and apparently being known for their Malaysian hawker style food, I just had to pull my girlfriend along with me to Strathfield, fight over parking and dive in.

I payed a visit during lunch on a Tuesday and these guys are just swamped with people on their lunch break.

As soon as you walk into the centre, you're flooded with the smell of deep fried roti, spicy curry and laksa! The shop is a lot smaller than I pictured with only a few tables and chairs aligned on one side of the store. Bar seats are also placed over looking into the open kitchen, and the large public plaza dining area just out front of the store defiantly helps spread the Ho Jiak love!

There are so many dishes to choose from, so good luck with the menu guys. We obviously just wanted to eat everything and like always, we over ordered and ate until our hearts were content!

What we ended up ordering:

Roti Canai with Curry Beef - The roti dipped in curry and the softened down beef hit the spot!

Chee Cheong Fun - Fish balls and steamed rice rolls drizzled in gooey shrimp paste and hoisin sauce.

Penang Fried Koay Teow - An awesome balance of flavour; sweet and not too salty!

Nasi Lemak - So simple! But so flavoursome. I really enjoyed the sweet chill paste! A little tip eating this dish: Don't eat this dish separate, strip the chicken off the bones mix it well!

Grandfather’s Congee - I love a good congee and Ho Jiak's congee is made just right! Not too dry or too watery. Loved the smell fried garlic and shallots.

I love that Ho Jiak's dishes are kept very simple by making sure that their recipes are authentic and exactly what you'd find in the streets of Penang. SCORE! Their store decor is a little bit cute too! Unique and rustic comparing to all the other stores around - defiantly a stand out.

If anyone is headed out to Strathfield for a feed, check these guys out. They're located in the Strathfield Plaza next to Oliver Brown, you won't miss it. Or visit their website and drool over their menu first at www.hojiak.com.au.

They're also currently running a promotion with any meal purchased and by hitting like on their Facebook page + checking in, you'll receive a FREE drink!

Teh Tarik's for us - YUMMMMM!
